Hey Scrim;

Just home from the Day Job and checking this show out.
Sounding pretty good!
Can't go wrong with Sugaree as opener I just listened to Lake Placid not to long ago.

Hunter's matrix of the 6-3-76 show in Portland, OR.

Great TLEO, Supplication jam and Candyman.

Sublime Crazy Fingers with nice Donna harmonies.

Can't wait to hear Let it Grow and Help>Slip>Frank!

Yeah! JimmyK- You hijacked my Friday night buddy. Thanks!!!
This is a really good show. (like 4 hours later)
I kinda of felt like the Might as Well and the Round and Round were like two giant rocking book ends with a whole bunch of mellow Dead in the middle.
I like Help>Slip>Franklins late in the set like that.
Also THE ROSES as a late ballad is real good.
Donna sounds great here to my ears (with a slight rasp too)
I am going to have to go back and listen to those tapers it sounds like they have a great running commentary.
Leave it to tapers to banter in time to the bands noodling.
How about the Wheel for an encore.
What would be your chances of calling that in the hotel room before the show?
Was real curious to see how they would launch into Wheel very nicely done. You can hear many in the crowd are surprised as the lyrics come in. (Very nicely played)
The closing is a pretty hard stop for the Wheel probably why it never made regular encore appearances.
WHEEL-Still super cool as encore-it had a more JGB feel.

The lyric that brought to the smoking crater of my mind:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T1N84wemDNk

Some of them standing, some were waiting in the line
As if there was something that they thought they might find
Taking some strength from the feelings that always were shared
And in the background, the eyes that just stared

What was it brought you out here in the dark?
Was it your only way of making your mark
Did you get rid of all the voices in your head?
Do you now miss them and the things that they said?

On your own admission you raised up the knife
And you brought it down ending another man's life
When it was done you just threw down the blade
While the red blood spread wider like the anger you made

I don't want this anger that's burning in me
It's something from which it's so hard to be free
But none of the tears that we cry in sorrow or rage
Can make any difference, or turn back the page

12/14/71 GD
A bit outside my comfort zone - trying to get an appreciation for '71....
Not a good year for me. Only 8/6 works for me.
I see the year as a necessary evil - they had to work out the new songs (I mean "normal songs", like El Paso, Bertha, etc., not New Potato, The Eleven) to get to what they reached in '72 - '74.

Nice show. Good Mexicalli (?!). Good Other One. Good Not Fade. But would rather hear '70 or '72.

EDIT: I know about the April NY shows.
The DP from Oct. is supper good.

Always been a big fan of the Animals era, especially the "raving & drooling" and "you gotta be crazy" they were playing in 75 & 76.
BUT, as of late, I can't seem to get out of that thin slice of shows with "Childhood's End" and then a year or so later when they opened with "Obscured by Clouds>When You're In". Love the sound of Gilmour's guitar! Unfortunately, they didn't tour behind "More"—which is a shame.

This is "Childhood's End" from Zurich 72. It's an aud but it's mostly the singing and the keyboard that is "muddied". If you like the sound, there's a whole show (I think from a few months later back in Zurich—it's DSOTM in a whole new light, especially, "Any Colour You Like".)

Enjoy,
Judge TOOTMO

"He is not a very nice pig, but he is a big pig"

The Animals stuff was when Floyd started to get that real tug between the mellowness of David and the fierce side of
Roger.
